Wednesday, April 15th was more than tax day for Americans. It was a day to celebrate the 5th anniversary of Mrs. Obama’s Let’s Move! Campaign. The First Lady along with students around the country marked the celebration with the 7th annual planting of the White House Garden. The featured young gardeners accepted Mrs. Obama’s #GimmeFive challenge, that encourages Americans to “#GimmeFive things they are doing to eat better, be more active, and lead a healthier life”, by planting five vegetables. The famous five veggies were broccoli, spinach, lettuce, radishes and bok choy.

The students were thrilled to have the opportunity to represent their schools and communities, and of course meeting The First Lady of the United States, but they also were very enthusiastic about their seedling gifts of the Five Vegetables. Eleven year old Amelia Anderson and Marley Santos from Foothill Elementary in Boulder, Colorado, said, “we can’t wait to return home to start our family gardens.”

Since the launch of the Let’s Move! Campaign, entire communities consisting of schools, business and political leaders and both private and civic organizations, have partnered to help kids and their families lead healthier lives. Let’s Move! this year created an Interactive Map to serve as a resource for those who are ready to get Moving and Get Involved.
